All About Misty…

Misty Copeland at the ABT Spring Gala by Joanna BakerFirebird debuted this season on Monday at the ABT Spring Gala, this time featuring Misty as a principal dancer. So exciting! Going to opening night at Lincoln Center is super fun, the hubby and I went last year. Everyone gets dressed up and they roll out the red carpet which means lots of people watching and gorgeous gown inspiration. Misty’s Prabal Gurung look for this year’s gala was stunning, so of course I had to illustrate her!

Senior Thesis - Ballet Drawings by Joanna Baker

Have you ever seen the Russian documentary, Ballerina? I ran across it while browsing Netflix and was so intrigued. It follows five aspiring prima ballerinas as they train to be part of the Kirov ballet. Definitely a must see if you love dance…

I took lessons from age four up until I went away for college and even though I haven’t danced in five years, ballet continues to stay with me. My undergraduate visual art thesis featured fragmented, charcoal and pastel renderings of ballerinas in motion. Looking back at my drawings from senior year made me want to start dancing again.

Some of the sketches above eventually became a part of my thesis. A few were rough, quick, sketches but most them were more refined. One thing’s for sure, I really miss having unlimited time to draw just for drawing’s sake…
