Casetify x Joanna Baker…

casetifydebutsmallHappy weekend lovelies! I have some exciting news to share on the shop front. I’ve recently partnered with Casetify (a leading phone case manufacturer who prints on transparent cases so your golden iPhone can shine through!) and am now offering for the first time ever some of my favorite illustrations on cell phone cases.

It was so much fun choosing which illustrations to feature and I will definitely be adding more to my Casetify shop soon. If you have an illustration in mind that you’d love to see on a phone case, iPad cover, etc. let me know! I hope you have a fabulous Saturday and happy phone case shopping =)

Milestones Great & Small…

instagram-recap-joanna-bakerI’m a firm believer in celebrating victories big and small when you’re working hard to pursue a dream… and this past Sunday, I reached 3,000 Instagram followers!

When I quit my full-time job back in January of this year, I had a vision of where I wanted to be, the support of my close friends and family, and about 600 sweet Instagram cheerleaders giving me that extra boost to make the leap.

Fast forward nearly 5 1/2 months later and I’m able to share my journey with some wonderful people! I love seeing the comments and making a connection through my art, it helps me to keep going, keep pushing to achieve my goals and know in my heart that if you work hard enough and believe in yourself, you can will your dreams into reality.

I hope you have a happy Wednesday and a wonderful July 1st! I’m excited to celebrate the 4th this weekend with some dear friends and hopefully plenty of watermelon! =)

All About the Art Supplies…

supplies4-joanna-bakerHappy Friday! Hope you had a great week and have fabulous plans for the weekend! I get a lot of comments on Instagram and questions via e-mail asking what materials I use to create my drawings. So for a fun Friday post, I thought I’d share all about my favorite supplies!

First up, the most important part… Copic Sketch markers. They are definitely my favorite brand and although I have Chartpak and Prismacolor markers too, I can achieve the best blending with Copics. Unfortunately they are also the most expensive =( but I think it’s worth it. The brush side on the sketch marker almost feels like painting! If you’re going to go for the Copics, be sure to pick up a colorless blender too. It helps blend colors together and can even dilute pigment if you make a little mistake or need to soften the color. My favorite Copics for skin tones are YR000 Silk, E50 Egg Shell, E51 Milky White, E31 Brick Beige, and E35 Chamois and for the perfect pout, R29 Lipstick Red and RV29 Crimson.

The second most important… paper. I’ve tried my fair share of papers and it’s really hard to find ones that don’t bleed and feather when the markers soak in. So far the best ones I’ve found are both by Canson. My go-to paper for originals is the Canson 150lb. Illustration “FanBoy” paper. I usually work on 9 x 12 size paper and then trim it down if I need to. It’s a smooth, acid-free, heavyweight paper and is nice and substantial for original pieces. For practicing and doing rough sketches I use Canson Marker Paper. It has a special coating on it that prevents bleed-through to the other side. You can really move the ink around on this paper which can be fun for blending but can also lead to muddy looking drawings. So experiment and have fun with it!

I use colored pencils and ink to do the outlines on all my drawings. I keep going back to Prismacolor pencils because I have my favorite colors for outlining, Black, 90% Cool Grey, and 70% Cool Grey. For highlights I use a white Prismacolor pencil and if crisp white is needed, either a white gouache and tiny paint brush or even a white gel pen for details. For really dark blacks, I sometimes use black Micron pens or Copic pens on outlining but this is used very sparingly.

That’s pretty much it! I hope this helps when choosing your own art supplies. It’s fun to try new things and experiment with new techniques. Happy sketching!

Simply Framed x Joanna Baker…

makeup5Exciting shop news to report! I’ve recently partnered with Simply Framed to offer beautiful custom framing on all of my art prints! Each hand-crafted wooden frame is created right here in the USA.

When you add framing to your order, you’ll receive a carefully packaged kraft gift-wrapped piece ready for hanging. It comes complete with UV-shielding plexiglass (which protects against about 89% of UV rays and 92% of light transmission), a custom cut acid-free 4-ply white mat with beveled edges, protective paperback finishing, wall bumpers, and hanging hardware. Read more about the Simply Framed process here.

Now that framing is easy, I’m taking advantage and offering for the first time ever framed original artwork! I’ve decided to clean out my {overflowing} stash of originals and will make some of them available for sale in my online shop. These items are all one of a kind, hand illustrated on acid-free 150lb illustration board, signed and dated in ink. I’ll be adding them to the shop in waves so be sure to check back often to see when new pieces are up for sale!

And to top off the exciting news (you may have already seen on Instagram), a selection of my note cards, journals, greeting cards, and coasters are now available in my first ever retail location! The Greenpoint General Store now carries my illustrations at 87 Oak Street in Brooklyn. Be sure to stop by and see them for yourself in person =)

Hope you have a happy and productive week!!

P.S. Everything I debuted at Renegade Craft Fair is now available in the shop, so be sure to check it out!

Behind the Scenes…

behind-the-scenes-1-joanna-bakerHappy Tuesday! I’ve been busy working on prepping for the fair but thought I’d take a moment and share a bit about the behind the scenes stuff… the stuff that happens when you quit your full time job and take a leap of faith…

I can’t believe it’s been four months now since I left my corporate fashion job. There have been so many emotions that have gone along with it and getting used to a new way of living and working is still a work-in-progress. I feel like I’m far from figuring it out but I do know that I’m headed in the direction of something that makes me happy!

Some of my favorite things so far about freelancing:

1. Being able to prepare and eat healthier meals — this seems simple but having the time to grocery shop and plan to eat a proper breakfast, lunch, and dinner makes a huge difference in my overall well-being!
2. Setting goals and having the freedom to work at my own pace to achieve them — I’ve always worked best when I understand what’s expected of a project, know the deadline, and then am left alone to prioritize and get the job done. Freelancing definitely feels right in that sense.
3. Having the flexibility to schedule things in the middle of the day — this makes going to doctor and dentist appointments so much easier!
4. Taking on more custom illustration projects that make me happy — my greatest joy so far in all of this is getting to work with lovely new customers to create unique pieces of art for them. I love packaging up an original creation and sending it off to it’s new home knowing that someone is super excited to get it on the other end or send it as a special gift!

Some of the things I’m still getting used to:

1. Not having a team of people to bounce ideas off of — it’s been an adjustment not having someone else to turn around and ask a question or see what they think about something… I do ask Junebug a fair amount but she doesn’t seem to have too many opinions about my work or business goals =)
2. Feeling connected to coworkers and working towards a shared goal — there is definitely something to be said about everyone working together to get something done. Freelancing is often a one person show and it can be isolating. It helps to reach out via e-mail or in person to other artists and freelancers. Even making a simple connection through Instagram helps to keep that human interaction alive.
3. Not knowing who/what/where I will work next and taking opportunities as they come — this is all still new to me and right now I’m getting a feel for the amount of work, type of work, and how to keep more consistent work.
4. Having to advocate for myself 24/7 and consistently putting myself out there — I feel like I’m either actively working on or thinking about some aspect of my business every waking minute. When it’s all up to you, figuring out how this will all work consumes your thoughts. This is both really exciting and really terrifying! I try to balance out these thoughts with a healthy dose of perspective, getting out, going for a walk, running unrelated errands, etc. but I’ll be the first to admit that these thoughts are a beast to wrangle with.

behind-the-scenes-4-joanna-baker

I have to remind myself that some amazing things have happened in these past four months. I’ve had some wonderful Instagram features from Essie, Birchbox, Copic Markers, Carolina Herrera, and Bergdorf Goodman, I have built and launched my own online store with brand new illustrated stationery and gifts, I got accepted into Renegade Craft Fair and will be debuting all my work for the first time ever in public on June 6th. (So excited for this!!) These things may seem small, but it’s the little things that eventually add up or lead to bigger things. And even though I don’t know what the future looks like exactly, I have to continue leaping and know that what I’m doing will add up to something great!

I hope you have a wonderful, productive week and if you’d like to see more behind the scenes photos, be sure to follow me on Instagram =)
