Paris Couture Fashion Week Recap…

Joanna Baker Couture Week Fashion Illustrations

The couture shows last week did not disappoint! I got up early to watch some of the shows live stream from Paris and pick my favorites straight off the runways. It’s always hard to choose which looks to sketch as the inspiration is endless!

Fashion Month Part 2…

fashion-month-joanna-bakerEven though I don’t follow them as closely as NYFW, I still love catching some of the shows in London, Milan, and Paris. And this season some of my favorites were Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Elie Saab, and Dolce & GabbanaContinue reading

Couture Week Recap…

couture-girls-joanna-bakerLast week I was in complete sketching heaven… couture week was upon us and my instafeed was overflowing with inspiration. It’s always exciting when you have so many things to draw that you can’t keep up!

Giambattista Valli was by far my favorite… the proportions, the colors, the styling… it was all just begging to be sketched!! Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad also didn’t disappoint in a plethora of sparkles and gowns fit for queens. The Valentino show was very dark but very beautiful. I wasn’t as inspired to draw any of those looks yet though…  I think I’m still too much in a summer state of mind! =) A golden goddess from the Elie Saab show:

We had planned a visit to the country to see my family this past weekend but I knew I couldn’t leave my art supplies in New York. So I packed up everything and kept sketching on the go! Three sparkly looks from Zuhair Murad:

So many sparkles and so much tulle… it’s time for me to come back to reality but I just can’t get over these photos! Someday maybe Giambattista will be my everyday 😉 Have a fabulous week!

Birthdays, Features, and Mentions…

birthdaycake-joanna-bakerHappy April!! This past week has been super exciting for more reasons than one and I’m so happy to be able to share it all with you. If you follow me on Instagram, you may know that a week ago today, I turned twenty-nine. That’s right, it’s the last official year of my twenties and I can’t believe I’m that much closer to thirty!! Yikes. According to my eight year old self, I should be married by now, have a house in the country and a horse in the backyard. Thankfully I can check at least one of those things off that list =) I had a moment last week where the realization of “thirty” caught me off guard. I gave it about five seconds of thought and then moved on… there’s too much to do to be worried about that one!

I had a great birthday and was lucky enough to soak up the morning sunshine while strolling through the floral district, get a glittered mani-pedi, meet with a client downtown, try my first ever doughnut from Dough (heaven), do a little window shopping, have birthday drinks at The Winslow and devour yummy birthday cake from Milk Bar. Life’s biggest moments are so much better when shared with friends!

There is some exciting shop news to be revealed shortly but in the meantime, I wanted to share a couple of Instagram mentions… march-april-press-joanna-baker

Copic markers are my go-to for all my illustrations and last night, Copic featured my floral eiffel tower illustration on their Instagram! My collection of Copics is one of my most prized possessions so I was excited to get mentioned on their feed. It’s about time I go to the art store and stock up on my favorites!

This morning I woke up to an Instagram mention from Bergdorf Goodman… the holy grail of fashion… who featured my Christian Louboutin shoe sketch on their Instagram account. So exciting!! I visited BG on Saturday and pretty much drooled over these amazing beauties… I knew they just had to be sketched =)

All the wonderful comments and support I’ve gotten on social media over the past couple of weeks have been amazing. Sometimes it’s hard to put work out there and wonder what happens to it…does anyone see it? Does it just sort of float off into the Instagram stratosphere? You are all so kind and those encouraging comments help get me through the inevitable times of doubt. Thank you so much, dear readers, and if you’d like to catch glimpses of my works in process, be sure to follow me on Instagram! xoxo

Dreaming in Ombre…

Another couture gown inspired by the Paris runways… look #26 by Elie Saab, oh heavenly look #26, you made me run to my desk and immediately start sketching. I love that kind of inspiration! The fall 2014 couture show is absolutely divine… I would live in it if I could. Thankfully, the lovely people at Elie Saab have made the video available for those of us who couldn’t {le sigh} attend the Paris shows. I will definitely have this one on repeat!

One of my favorite things about fashion illustrating is seeing the figure come to life moment by moment until she is fully realized in color and detail. This time, I decided to document those steps and give you a peek into my process. I like seeing how the sketch progresses… rendering all those sequins, pearls, and embroidery definitely took the most time!

I hope you have a great rest of your week… if only Mondays were this glamourous =)
